Is Your Thyroid Slowing You Down?

Many get frustrated with their weight loss program when they plateau early, have trouble keeping the weight off and even have to work exceptionally hard to lose anything at all. Often times this difficulty losing weight can be due to an under-active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). This can often go undiagnosed by your GP because the common pathology test for your thyroid (TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone) has rather a wide range considered ‘normal’ and it doesn’t account for the production of an ineffective thyroid hormone called reverse T3 in some people. So, could your thyroid gland be sabotaging your weight loss efforts. Here are some of the other symptoms:

  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Constipation
  • Hoarse voice
  • Menstrual irregularities and infertility
  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Hair loss, notably in the outer section of the eyebrow
  • Dry hair and skin
  • Weakness & fatigue

The good news is there are natural treatments for regulating your thyroid gland such as Bladderwrack (look in the virtual herb garden), Withania, Iodine, zinc and Selenium.

Shake The Weight Before Spring

Spring is usually the time when clients traditionally start expressing an interest in losing weight so I’m sending out a challenge to all my clients and friends to get a head start on their weight loss efforts so then, come spring, you’ll already be proud of your results and not freaking out at the first sign of warm weather.

As you know the weight loss program I promote is ‘Shake It’ an evidence based meal replacement program which ensures you maintain lean muscle mass (therefore your metabolism), and switch on fat burning.

There is no assumption that you are simply overweight because you don’t exercise and eat too much either. Whilst on the Shake-It program, treatment for underlying causes of weight problems such as hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance, low thyroid activity and emotional eating, can be addressed in the background ensuring that your weight loss efforts are more effective and sustainable.
